Unity’s Austin office translates the company’s creative culture into a workplace that supports independent making and shared experimentation. Local archetypes—the cowboy drawn to the campfire and the hippie following an unexpected path—shape varied settings for focus, collaboration, and discovery, helping a distributed workforce reconnect while testing new ways of working.

Local Archetypes Shape Workplace Choice
Commissioned art, custom graphics, and varied work settings carry the story without making it literal. The Campfire, a large library with flexible seating and multiple postures, creates a central place to exchange ideas. A virtual-reality lounge invites employees and guests into the emerging worlds built with Unity software. The office remains connected to a global workplace strategy, but its identity comes from a distinctly Austin tension: independence and community, discipline and wandering, work with a plan and discovery without one. That balance gives employees recognizable choices while showing recruits and visitors how Unity’s culture supports both individual making and the collective experimentation behind its technology.

Unity Technology Accelerates Alignment
Developed early in the pandemic, the project used Unity Reflect for real-time three-dimensional renderings and walkthroughs. IA worked with Unity’s in-house developers to support remote presentations, stakeholder decisions, and construction coordination, making the client’s own platform part of the design story. Workplace 2.0 reduces traditional desks and expands alternative settings. Hot-desking is integrated into team neighborhoods, while bookable “think tanks” with marker-board and pin-up surfaces can be occupied for days or weeks. Furniture and audiovisual configurations include remote participants more naturally. The office is practical and unconventional in equal measure, giving a distributed workforce room to focus, gather, and pursue ideas beyond the expected.
