Inside a century-old Cambridge building, this sustainable energy company turns its global mission into an everyday platform for work, learning, and client engagement. Four landscapes—wetlands, mountains, deserts, and the Arctic—connect brand, technology, and environmental performance, helping employees and visitors understand what the organization is protecting and how its innovations move that work forward.
Landscapes Make the Mission Visible
Color, architecture, and wayfinding evoke four global landscapes without reproducing them literally. Technical power drawings, three-dimensional artifacts, a growing patent timeline, live energy and carbon data, and small moments of surprise reveal the company’s innovations at different scales. The reception begins beneath a mountain-inspired ceiling and kinetic displays, then opens toward a flexible café and all-hands space. An immersive product demonstration lab brings the work within reach for visitors and employees. By pairing environmental narratives with evidence of research and performance, the workplace makes an ambitious mission easier to understand. Each floor becomes both a place to work and a chapter in the company’s case for change.
Performance Reinforces the Purpose
The workplace moves from an energetic arrival toward a library and moodier speakeasy, creating distinct settings for the beginning, middle, and end of the day. Wetland graphics animate a technology lounge and broadcast studio; a desert-sunset boardroom, project mezzanine, and quiet car provide alternate moods; and Arctic color gives the upper floor clarity. Unassigned neighborhoods combine workstations, farm tables, phone booths, flexible offices, and assigned leadership rooms. Electric-vehicle charging, upgraded historic systems, and recycled, local, renewable, and low-embodied-carbon materials reinforce the mission materially. The headquarters connects environmental purpose with daily decisions, making the company’s work visible to employees, recruits, clients, and partners.
