ICF’s Reston headquarters is the flagship for a nationwide workplace transformation shaped from the inside out. Interviews and focus groups revealed how employees work; IA translated those findings into a hybrid model that reduces unnecessary real estate while improving collaboration, hospitality, technology, and the reasons people choose to gather.

Research Defines the Hybrid Model
Agile work areas, collaboration settings, and activity-based zones form distinct neighborhoods. Employees can move among individual focus, project work, conversation, and larger group activity, with furniture and planning able to adjust as attendance changes. A dedicated amenity floor concentrates the terrace, café, conference center, auditorium, and executive suite. These destinations serve employees and visitors while giving office attendance a clear purpose beyond access to a desk. The planning directly reflects what IA learned through interviews and focus groups, turning employee behavior into a repeatable workplace model. The flagship provides direction for future ICF offices without forcing every location into the same physical solution.

"The quality of the design is exactly what we had envisioned, and the IA team worked with us to design and deliver the project within the budget and schedule parameters...IA was an invaluable partner in the creation of a headquarters that is symbolic of where we’ve been – and where we’re going.”
Senior Director, Global Real Estate & Facilities, ICF

Strategy Reduces Space and Impact
High-impact graphics communicate ICF’s history, values, and sustainability commitments, helping employees understand the purpose behind the organization’s work. Technology supports hybrid collaboration without making the office feel like a demonstration floor. The strategy continued to evolve through the pandemic, ultimately reducing ICF’s real-estate footprint, cost, and environmental impact. LEED Gold certification makes part of that performance measurable. The headquarters integrates strategy, interior design, technology, storytelling, and sustainability within one employee-centered destination. It reduces unnecessary commuting, supports different ways of participating, and gives the national portfolio a practical framework for adapting space to attendance, culture, and business needs over time.
