IA helped a confidential federal agency consolidate its headquarters into a 500,000-square-foot workplace in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Developed through interviews, visioning sessions, charrettes, and tours, the new environment replaces a compartmentalized, disorienting office model with a flexible, mission-centered headquarters supporting security, public service, employee wellbeing, and continued organizational change.

A Clearer Model for Work
Research revealed an aging workplace with limited sightlines, uneven access to daylight, too few meeting rooms, excessive storage, and a maze-like plan. IA reorganized the headquarters as a predominantly open environment with flexible furniture, shared conference rooms, focus spaces, team areas, and settings for town halls and all-hands gatherings. Workstations gain light and views, while clean architectural elements and clearer circulation make the large workplace easier to understand. The system supports telework, varied workstyles, and future reorganization without losing consistency. As the base building advanced and agency needs shifted, IA coordinated out-of-sequence decisions to keep the workplace aligned with growth.

Mission and Security Stay Visible
The headquarters brings complex public, employee, and secure functions into one coherent environment. A 300-person auditorium supports agency-wide communication. Protected SCIF spaces enable sensitive work, while a records library provides controlled public access. A fitness facility and wellness center extend support for employees across the day. Environmental graphics turn the agency’s history, values, and mission into focal points that build pride and help orient people throughout the building. Timeless forms, strong color, and flexible settings give the workplace a durable identity. Together, these elements move the agency from a collection of enclosed offices toward a connected headquarters prepared for changing needs.
