Congratulations to the Sixth Annual Diversity In Design Scholarship Winners

IA has announced the recipients of the 2023–2024 Diversity in Design Scholarship, now in its sixth year. Created in partnership with the IIDA Foundation, the program recognizes emerging designers who bring diverse perspectives to the profession. This year’s scholarship invited minority students enrolled in design or architecture programs to explore the role of AI in design, including its impact on DEI, the challenges of inherent bias, and how emerging technology may shape the future of the profession. Essays were reviewed anonymously by leaders from IA and the IIDA Foundation.

Sofia Vinasco, who studies Interior Design and Business at Louisiana State University, received the $5,000 first-place scholarship for “AI in Design, from a Minority Standpoint.”

Josef Beal, completing an MFA in Interior Architecture at George Washington University, received the $3,000 second-place award for “Diversity Can Be Designed into AI.”

Four additional $500 honorable mention scholarships were awarded to BryAnna Lewis of Texas State University for “Reimagining the Impossible”; Suwade Pe Than of SCAD for “The Good, The Bad and The Unknown: An Ode to Humanity and Innovation”; Julianna Ferguson of the University of Arkansas for “AI’s Impact on Design: Navigating Challenges and Embracing Opportunities”; and Joseph Olivieri of New York Institute of Technology for “The Decommercialization of AI.”
